Positions within the Western Medical Department

 

 

Assistant General Surgeon  With a rank of Colonel. Commands the Department.

 

Department Medical Inspector  With a rank of Lt. Colonel. Serves as the Deputy Dept. Commander.

 

Corps Medical Director   With a rank of Lt. Colonel.

Serves as Corps Commander. To each corps was assigned a medical director, a commissioned surgeon, his permanent assignment being to promote and coordinate the Medical activities within the Corps.

 

Corps Medical Inspector  With a rank of Lt. Colonel or Major.

Serves as the Deputy Corps Commander. To each corps was assigned a medical Inspector, a commissioned surgeon, his permanent assignment being to promote and coordinate the Medical activities within the Corps.

 

District Chief Surgeon  With a rank of Major.  Duties include setting up and running the field hospital, tending to the wounded, performing surgical procedures in the field and at temporary field hospitals under adverse conditions. Giving on-site demonstrations to curious onlookers.  There may be multiple Districts and/or Battalions within a State

 

Regimental Senior Surgeon  With a rank of Major.  Duties include setting up and running the field hospital, tending to the wounded, performing surgical procedures in the field and at temporary field hospitals under adverse conditions. Giving on-site demonstrations to curious onlookers. They serve as the Head Surgeon in a large Field Hospital.

 

Surgeon  With a rank of Major or Captain.  The duties are the same as Regimental Surgeon except they are not the head Surgeon.  They may command a small Field Hospital.

 

Assistant Surgeon  With a rank of Captain or 1st Lieutenant.  Duties include assisting the Surgeon in setting up and running the field hospital, tending to the wounded, performing surgical procedures in the field and at temporary field hospitals under adverse conditions. They may command a Field aid station.

 

Pharmacist or Purveyor  With a rank of Major or Captain.

 

Dentist  With a rank of Major or Captain.

 

Medical Cadet  With a rank of 2nd Lieutenant.  A Surgeon in Training.

 

Hospital Steward - 1st Class  With a rank of 1st Sergeant.   Duties include being the muscle in setting up the field hospitals, tending to the wounded on the battlefield, providing water, comfort, bandaging, and carrying off the field to the field hospital. Also includes assisting the surgeons and nurses in surgery and demonstrations.

 

Hospital Steward - 2nd Class  With a rank of Sergeant. Assists the 1st Class Hospital Steward.

 

Hospital Steward - 3rd Class  With a rank of Corporal.  Assists the 1st Class Hospital Steward

 

Quarter Master Sergeant  Responsible for the upkeep of the Corps equipment.

 

Provost Marshal  With a rank of 1st Lieutenant or Sergeant Major.  Maintains order and guards enemy prisoners of war seeking medical treatment.

 

Assistant Provost Marshal  With a rank of Sergeant Major, 1st Sergeant or Sergeant. Assists the Provost Marshal
